East Rundle

Recently I was invited by my friend Kyle to join him on a hike up East Rundle. Our hike was full of great company, great conversation, and beautiful views. I couldn’t have asked for a better day! Here are a few photos from the trail.

Sunday Mountain Drive

Today I spent the day in the mountains with my friend Cody, but rather than hiking we decided to take a drive since the weather was less than ideal. It was so much fun! Here is an image from our day.

The Time I Froze My Ass Off…Literally

I finally feel like it’s time for me to come out and explain why I haven’t been hiking much in the last few months and tell the story of what happened to me on my last hike, Midnight Peak. I’m hoping this will give people a laugh and possibly help teach others to stay within their limits when climbing mountains. Yes it is good to push yourself, but sometimes you can pay for it. In this case, I paid with my butt cheeks, haha!

Instagram and Social Media…the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Yesterday in my online journalism class we were assigned a project that focuses on social media, so I figured this would be a perfect time for me to talk about one of my favourite social media outlets; Instagram. It’s so much more than just another social-networking app. It’s a friend making, people connecting, idea inspiring, photo sharing, and business networking application. I have personally used the app for all of those things, and with 400 million monthly active users, I know I’m not alone. I love Instagram, and anyone who knows me is fully aware of that.

Burstall Pass

If you’re looking for an easy hike with a big pay off, then Burstall Pass is the trail for you. The vast views and stunning scenery make this a must-do hike. The trailhead is located 35km south of Canmore on the Smith-Dorrien/Spray Lakes Trail, across from the Chester Lake parking area.

Christie Falls

Christie Falls is a very short, beautiful hike just outside of Kelowna. I did this one with Cameron in May on a cold rainy day. I knew that this wasn’t supposed to be a very lengthy or challenging hike, but with the rain starting to get worse I knew we were in for a muddy and slippery trek down to the falls.

Hot Springs Cove

Anyone that knows me at all is fully aware that I’m slightly obsessed with hot springs. I love finding them, I love looking at them, and I especially love sitting in them. I’ve even made entire trips (multiple times) just out of hot spring hunting. While there are a few hot springs that I won’t ever post about or give the names of because I don’t want to see these beautiful places get abused, there are a few that I don’t mind talking about. Hot Springs Cove is one of them. This particular spring is definitely a well known tourist destination, but it’s popular for good reason. It’s pretty amazing!

Twin Lakes Sunrise and Larch Hike

As you probably already know from my last post, larch season is my favourite time to be in the mountains here in Alberta. Personally, I would take the cool chill of the fall air over balmy summer temperatures any day if it meant that I would get to hike beneath a canopy of these unbelievably soft needled, vibrant coloured larches. These trees fascinate me because they look like an evergreen but are actually deciduous conifers, so the green needles that are on them through spring and summer change colours and drop to the ground in the early fall. They tend to only grow in valleys and on mountainsides, and are best seen around the third week of September.

Larches and Pocaterra Ridge

Fall is hands down my favourite time of year, and it’s most definitely my favourite time to be in the mountains. The vibrant yellow colours that paint the mountainsides are so beautiful to look at, it’s hard not to fall in love with the larch trees that cause this stunning scenery. I was so excited when some friends invited me to do some larch hunting on Pocaterra Ridge the third week of September. I knew we would get see some pretty amazing views, but it ended up being even better than I expected.
